A few nights ago I did the most perfect restaurant gig.
I noticed a table of Spanish speakers. (Very unusual, in this very small town).
So, I played lots of Spanish music, which got no reaction at all.
I almost gave up.
Then I played a Venezuelan Waltz, which got rapturous results. So I played more.
After the gig, one of the guys came up to me, gabbing away in Spanish (he didn't even ask if I understood, he said he just assumed that I must have gone to the source to play all that stuff, so I must understand).
He knew all of the music that I had been playing. The composer's names... everything!
He said he had rarely heard anyone do his country's music so well.
And was amazed to hear it in Northern Canada.
I didn't need to tell him how unbelievable an experience it was for me to have a knowledgeable audience. (in this place, or any other).
